Understanding the term
The term is used to define a non destructive test method of inspecting / testing areas of ferromagnetic surface. The aim of the process is to identify discontinuities in the surface.
How does it work?
Where the cracks or discontinuities are identified, a technician will mark the affected areas and will establish whether or not the material complies with the agreed quality levels.
The irregularities are identified using a special magnetic powder. This is known as iron oxide. The tests can be run either on dry or wet surfaces, depending on the type of test and type of tested material. However, the iron oxide can be used in both cases.
